How is TotalPatent™ different from its competitors?
- We offer more relevant intellectual property content than any other provider. 22 full-text authorities in one source - 5 million full-text records (not counting English translations) more than anyone else offers.
- The TotalPatent™ service now includes the world’s most complete full-text source of granted patents – including searchable PDFs – issued by the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office, formerly the British Patent Office, from 1982 to current, making LexisNexis TotalPatent the only source for New Series pre-2002 GB grant full text and PDF images.
- TotalPatent™ also has exclusive analytical content including the Elsevier Science Journals.
- We worked in partnership with intellectual property experts to understand their patent research work and the content and tools they needed to get the job done, as we were creating the technology. We received their input on all areas and at all stages of product development - everything from the design of the web-based search to the retrieval options, thus ensuring TotalPatent was an efficient and effective tool.
- TotalPatent™ provides access to the world's largest collection of searchable full-text and bibliographic patent databases—in the language of publication with English translations—including images, citations, legal status, and patent family collections.
How does it work?
TotalPatent™ allows users to group results into patent families, and to reduce the families to a single record per invention. The legal status is shown for every record in order that users can verify whether the patent remains in force or whether it has expired or been withdrawn, etc.
Who is using TotalPatent™?
TotalPatent™ was created for the patent professional such as patent attorneys, information professionals, researchers and engineers.
Why isn’t the new TotalPatent™ content available on lexis.com?
In order to best serve our lexis.com customers we felt it was important that we enabled lexis.com users to seamlessly access TotalPatent™. At the same time, we talked to patent professionals to understand their needs and determined that a different interface with different tools and features would better suit their patent searching needs. We believe customers now have a “best of both worlds” choice for performing their patent related research.
Is the search language the same as lexis.com?
TotalPatent™ is built on the lexis.com platform and, therefore, uses the same syntax, connectors, wildcards etc. as lexis.com. TotalPatent™ contains a context sensitive Help system to guide users new to using lexis.com.
Which authorities will have available English translations?
- In the existing release, English language machine-translations are available for current documents published by several of the major authorities: EPO, WIPO, Germany and France.
- Later in the year, the machine-translation backfiles for these authorities will be added to TotalPatent.
- At the same time, machine-translations of the weekly updates and backfiles for the following collections will be added to TotalPatent: Austria, Belgium, Canada, (the former) East Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
- This will bring the total number of patent authorities available to search in English language machine-translations to 16.
How much does TP cost?
- TotalPatent™ is available on a subscription basis based on customer’s needs and usage. It is also available transactionally.
What are the system requirements?
TotalPatent™ is web-based and although no software installation is required, users will find having Adobe Reader and Flash necessary for viewing PDF documents or accessing the analytical charts. It supports all the major Web browsers.
